Butterflies in my stomach - is an anxious and nervous feeling inside yourself (inside your stomach). This image is metaphor of dealing with stress, anxiety and releasing my inner bugs. I've had issues with dark thoughts and depression for the past couple of years and this image represents my attempt to reconsider my life and to be reborn into a new person.



Here's a little making of and editing timelapse. 3,5 hours in 3,5 minutes!

My Demons Galore

A promo photoshoot I did last fall for a band My Demons Galore. This shoot is a bit different from what I usually do but I enjoy the result and wanted to share it with you:)

This photoshoot I did last year in October for the music band My Demons Galore.

It is a funny story how I met these guys. I'm a good friends with the drummer Sergey. When I just moved to United States two years ago I found my first job as a product photographer in a tiny company in distant neighborhood in Brooklyn . Sergey was already working there. I found out that he is from Ukraine too and he is a musician and we have many people we know in common. When My Demons Galore were giving their first show I was invited by Sergey and that's how I met the rest of the band.

After a while My Demons Galore were about to release their first EP. They asked me to do a promo photoshoot for them because they knew I'm a photographer and they loved my work. They wanted everything to be dark and mysterious, so they completely relyed on my taste and style. We spent some time discussing ideas, sharing references and after everything was consented we set the date.

In the morning on the day of the photoshoot they picked me and my equipment up and went out of the city. We spent all morning getting to the location, putting make up, setting up light.

I wanted to use a lot of dramatic light so I took almost all my equipment. I used my two Move 1200l kits with two MobiLed flashheads each so I had 4 lamps in total. For diffusing I used my Para 88, softboxes and umbrellas. I came fully equipped! I had a lot of different lightning set ups and was moving them constantly but I'll tell you about the first one that I've used for the photo with blue smoke and single photos of each band member.

In the right corner I had my MobiLed lamp with Para 88 attached for as a key light, in the left corner a lamp with silver umbrella as a fill light. Other two lamps I've put in the background to create different light accents like lightning up background and the tree branches. For the single shots I used the same key and fill light but also I've asked assistants to hold other two flashheads for back and side light for a more dramatic look. I don't usually do such set ups and I don't normally use this much light so this photoshoot was very experimental for me. But I enjoyed it.

This photoshoot took me out of my comfort zone and I'm very satisfied with the result. I really enjoy working with musicians because they are artists as well and usually are more open for experiments and interesting ideas.

My first experience with the Balloon Lightshaper was about two months ago. I was just testing it in my apartment and having fun doing a self portrait. This time I decided to continue my Moon series and do a real photoshoot with a model and on location.

The model is my good friend Yana Bobrikova who helped me to create paper flower for my last Gen NEXT project Flower Girl.

I started with drawing a sketch. Sketches help me not to forget the idea, better picture the whole composition and think over all the details.

We went to a lonely beach not far from our house, waited for the right time of sunset and after that we had only few minutes until it got completely dark. I used my Move 1200 kit with two MobiLed flash heads, one attached to the Balloon and the other one was on the stand to the model’s right. It was crazy windy so I couldn’t use any reflectors or umbrellas. The light turned out a little bit harsh so I had to soften it during further postproduction. The "pieces" that fell off the Moon were created with cell phone lights.

I often work in such extreme conditions and it was another great experience. I’ll probably continue my Moon series in future.

Flower Power

Most of my portfolio are images from my personal art projects, collaborations and workshops. But I also do private commissioned photoshoots from time to time. I try to work with people who have same vision and sense of beauty. The best results can be achieved if the client fully trusts your taste. But I always take all requests into consideration and we agree on all the details together. Sometimes I come to everything already set up, sometimes I create and develop the idea entirely from scratch.



This was one of those times. The girl’s name is Jenny O'Connell. She is an actress from New York. I met her this spring and she wanted to do something mystic and beautiful like out of a fairy tale. She wanted me to take care of the whole process because she trusted my judgment and loved my work. And that’s when I knew we would do a great job together. She had two options in her mind: a light flower theme and a dark mysterious one. After some consideration we decided to stick to the first one. There was a lot of discussion about the outfit, make up and color scheme. We definitely wanted to do a flower headpiece or a crown.

We decided to wait for the summer and search for a location. And that was a tricky one. New Yorkers are usually car-less people and most of the beautiful locations are out of the city. We already set the photoshoot date, booked a makeup artist and a hairstyle person, but the location was still a problem. Literally a couple weeks before the shoot I came up with a great idea to do huge paper flowers as a set. Everybody loved it. Location didn’t matter anymore, we could shoot in any city park.

To help me with making flowers I asked my friend Yana. We have quite an interesting story. She is from Ukraine as well. She is a photographer, stylist, decorator and just a very talented girl. She moved to the US with her family just 4 days before I did. I’m so lucky we now live in the same city and can work, collaborate and create together. In 2 weeks we picked up materials and she made those huge paper flowers and a crown.

The photoshoot took place in Prospect Park. It was pretty dark there because of the trees but some bright sun light was still shining through. That’s where my loyal companion, the Move 1200 kit, came to the rescue. I used one MobiLed flash head with a silver umbrella to soften harsh shadows from the sun. When it became darker, I used it as a continuous light because it’s less intense.

It was quite an interesting and fun experience to work with client on location and use professional lightning equipment. Move 1200 is just designed to shoot outdoors.

A couple of weeks ago I was browsing the broncolor website, searching for interesting lighting equipment for my next order. That’s when I came across the Balloon Lightshaper.



This area light with its all round light angle of 360 degrees is ideal for shooting naturally illuminated interiors. I got very interested and contacted Dan, Broncolor representative. He was very helpful and sent it to me for some tests.

I came up with the idea of my Moon image right away because of the perfect sphere shape of the Balloon and the nice soft light that it creates.

I decided to make this shot a self-portrait. It was made in my apartment and only took me a few minutes to prepare the setting. I used the Move 1200L kit with the Balloon attached to one MobiLed flash head and another MobiLed directed to the wall to create a contour light. I set up the tripod with my camera and took the remote control. I used the flash heads with the impulse light at their lowest intensity and a simple Nikkor 50 1.8 D lens. Camera settings were 1\200 s sutter speed, f3.2 aperture, ISO 400. The rest was made in postproduction.





It was a fun test and I am very happy with the results. I can’t wait to create new work with Balloon in the future and maybe even try a Moon series!

I first heard about broncolor when I was in the Ukraine. In my home city there's a high end photo studio which uses some of its equipment. broncolor  was always considered as a highly professional light amazing quality and great performance. Every young photographer dreamt about owning one.

I found out about Gen NEXT contest this winter accidentally. While browsing the internet and searching for photography contests I found broncolor’s Gen NEXT call for submissions. I was unsure at first whether I should enter it or not because I usually don’t use that much of artificial light in my work. But applying was free of charge and after some hesitation I eventually sent 3 photographs on the LAST day. After a month or so I received a phone call from Joel Mayer, the broncolor representative.

I'm a natural light shooter mostly. I love it's diffused character, mood, how it lights everything around. I like to play with finding good spots and using a reflector. Of course there are times when the natural light is not enough. Before I received my broncolor equipment I used simple speedlight flashes, a monopod and a white umbrella. It’s a pretty cheap and easy to handle kit. It is good for beginners, narrow and close spaces, when you need to move around with your light source a lot or you if you need something quick to arrange and assemble. It requires an assistant to hold the monopod though.

But I’ve come to the point in my photographic career when I wanted something more. I wanted to experiment with light, make it more cinematic and I needed more professional equipment for big projects and photoshoots.

When I was choosing the broncolor equipment for myself the priority was the ability to work on location, because I almost don’t shoot in studio. Something light and mobile, ideally with continuous light. That is when I realized there’s nothing more perfect for me than the broncolor Move 1200 battery powerpack with two MobiLed flash heads.

The first thing I wanted to do when I got my new equipment was to test it. I was so excited that I unpacked it and did some shots of myself right away. Well I could have taken pictures of my husband but he was too shy to pose. And I'm not that bad of a model after all :)

I used the Move 1200 pack with one MobiLed flash head, a continuous light adapter and a silver umbrella. The light turned out beautiful.

I've already had a chance to shoot with my Move 1200 kit on location in Crystal Caves which I'm longing to show to you soon. It was such a great experience! The power pack is fantastic. I have no idea what I would have done without it while in the Caves. It’s very light, small and portable, just perfect for a tiny girl like me. The Move 1200 has super quick recycle time and flash durations, the build is solid and stellar. The flash heads are small and omnidirectional which is extremely useful when the flash is high up. I also love the little extra customizations in the menu options like the ability to conserve power by having the pack shut down after a selectable period of time. Everything else in this kit is top notch as well including the RFS transceiver which can control the flash power remotely, the rolling backpack and soft case comes in very handy while on location.

My journey with broncolor lighting has just started but already i feel like i have taken the next step in my career as a photographer. I can't wait to share all the things i'm going to create with their gear on the Gen NEXT blog and hopefully inspire others to "gear up" as well!
