Piece of my Heart

Blue Heart installation is located in city Delft. The beautiful heart cut in sapphire (fake) stone symbolically represents the Blue Pottery of Delft.

Thank you Anna Psy for making those 3d paper blue hearts! The night before the workshop we stayed until 2 am to cutting them out and glueing, dyeing Anna's hair blue and doing test hair styles for the model. And up at 6 am! That's how things are done:) The weather wasn't on our side that day. It was so windy that it blew paper hearts away. I even didn't photoshop flying hair and skirt. But we came with a solution! We used sewing pins to pin hearts to the ground. Always a good idea to bring different essentials to the photoshoot like pins, scissors, thread, rope, glue, tape etc.

Спасибо Ане @annapsyartist за эти 3д бумажные сердца! На кануне МК мы сидели до 2х ночи, вырезали и клеили это все, красили волосы Ани в синий и пробовали прически для модели. И потом подъем в 6! Вот так и живем:) Погода была не на нашей стороне в тот день. Было так ветренно, что сдувало сердечки. Я даже не фотошопила платье и волосы. Но мы нашли выход! Мы прикололи сердца к земле булавками:) Всегда на съемку берите всякие нужные мелочи: булавки, иголки, нитки, ножницы, веревки, скотч и тд.

The day began nicely, it was cloudy and windy, but we were able to shoot the idea with blue heart in Delft. But then it started raining cats and dogs and didn't stop:( We had an option to go to the studio, where we eventually shot 3 idea. But I'm not a fan of shooting in the studio plus I wanted to use smoke bombs. So I said let's shoot outside under the rain 💪🏻 12 people stood under the trees and umbrellas dressed in rain coats and unhesitatingly and stoutly shot Jenna who was getting wet 💪🏻 Thanks everyone who helped and stayed, thanks Anna Psy for being our fireworker😁 I had to wiz and cast spells in Photoshop to make this photo work but I like the result.

Фото сделано в рамках моего МК в Нидерландах. Команда см выше 👆🏻 День начинался неплохо, было пасмурно и ветренно, но мы успели отснять идею с сердцем в Делфте. Но потом начался дождь, не прекращаясь лил как из ведра:( У нас был вариант поехать в студию, где мы потом таки сделали 3 идею. Но я вообще не люблю снимать в студиях и для этого образа хотела зажечь дымовую шашку. И я сказала снимаем под дождем! Стоя под деревьями, зонтиками, одетые в дождевики, 12 человек упорно и уверенно снимали Дженну, пока та мокла под дождем 💪🏻 Мне пришлось долго колдовать потом в фотошопе, чтобы сделать что-то достойное, но результатом я довольна.

This was the third and the last idea from the workshop. We were supposed to shoot it outside but it started raining and we couldn't risk the bird wellness. So we had nothing to do but go to the studio. Thank you cafeobscura for providing the space and giving us a shelter:) Also amazing Anna Psy who was bravely bearing with all the bird's tortures:)) No animal was harmed during the shoot!:)

The Essence of Life

Photo I made in Iceland for @freespiritcrew 's "Melting glaciers" project as a part of "The Essence of Life" climate change awareness campaign.

To make these two shots I literally had 5 minutes and 10 minutes to scout the location and think. We were a team of 4 photographers and 4 models with different costume designs, each of us had to work with each model. It was the end of the day, we were tired and cold. It was getting dark and we were running out of time. Our manager Fabrice gave me a command "Ok everybody needs to shoot on this location, you have 5 minutes, go!" 😄 It was intense, but turned out great!

Happy Halloween! 🎃 It's time to lighten your candles and make some sweet punch. Even though I didn't dress up this year because of my crazy schedule, here's a photo from the photoshoot we did couple weeks ago in Ukraine, in Kiev Botanical garden. It's my favorite time of the year!

Jack and Sally from The Nightmare Before Christmas by my all time favorite creator Tim Burton. Yes, it's a real life size Jack skeleton! Made and produced by the lovely model Judy Wudy​. Each time I'm just simply amazed by the craziness and passion for creation of ukrainian people! We had only about an hour to shoot before it got dark. So some spooky lights were used.

Джек и Салли из мультика "Кошмары перед Рождеством" моего самого любимого сказочника Тима Бертона. И да, это настоящий скелет Джек в натуральную величину! Сделанный чудесной Джуди Вуди @judy_wudy_27. Каждый раз поражаюсь нереальностью и страстью к творчеству украинских людей. У нас было всего около часа на съемку.

New photos we did couple months ago in Prospect Park in Brooklyn. At first the idea was for Melanie to go to that green water but then we saw signs that it's actually can be harmful😲 Algae is a small plant-like organism which grows in pond water. And it can be toxic! So we decided not to risk and not touch it. I had to improvise:) Hope you like it!

I've got tons of questions about my photo equipment so here's a short video showing it! Sorry it's a bit awkward, I'm shy and not experienced in talking on camera:)

But always remember that it's not camera and lenses who do the photos, it's the photographer! It really doesn't matter what equipment you use. One of my best images was made with old Nikon D80 and cheap Nikkor 50 1.8D. I just love the character and bokeh of vintage lenses that's why I use them. The secret of good photography is your experienced eye and good taste in art, some knowledge about composition, color and light. Don't be afraid to experiment and never blame your camera or lens!

Butterflies in my stomach - is an anxious and nervous feeling inside yourself (inside your stomach). This image is metaphor of dealing with stress, anxiety and releasing my inner bugs. I've had issues with dark thoughts and depression for the past couple of years and this image represents my attempt to reconsider my life and to be reborn into a new person.



Here's a little making of and editing timelapse. 3,5 hours in 3,5 minutes!

I did this shot during our last trip to Iceland at the famous DC-3 plane wreckage. The road to the plane is closed now so you have to walk about an hour to get there. It was windy and cold as hell and I almost freezed to death wearing only a shirt and a leather jacket, my eyes were running and couldn't feel my hands. The paper plane was an actual real paper plane I made before the shoot. How far can you go for a good shot?:)

Этот снимок я сделала во время нашей последней поездки в Исландию возле знаменитого авиакрушения самолета DC-3. Дорога к нему теперь закрыта и нужно идти почти час пешком. Было ужасно ветренно и холодно и я замерзла к чертям в одной рубашке и кожаной куртке, у меня текли глаза и я не чувствовала рук. Бумажный самолет был настоящим бумажным самолетом, который я сделала перед съёмкой. А как далеко вы готовы пойти ради хорошего снимка?:)

My Demons Galore

A promo photoshoot I did last fall for a band My Demons Galore. This shoot is a bit different from what I usually do but I enjoy the result and wanted to share it with you:)

This photoshoot I did last year in October for the music band My Demons Galore.

It is a funny story how I met these guys. I'm a good friends with the drummer Sergey. When I just moved to United States two years ago I found my first job as a product photographer in a tiny company in distant neighborhood in Brooklyn . Sergey was already working there. I found out that he is from Ukraine too and he is a musician and we have many people we know in common. When My Demons Galore were giving their first show I was invited by Sergey and that's how I met the rest of the band.

After a while My Demons Galore were about to release their first EP. They asked me to do a promo photoshoot for them because they knew I'm a photographer and they loved my work. They wanted everything to be dark and mysterious, so they completely relyed on my taste and style. We spent some time discussing ideas, sharing references and after everything was consented we set the date.

In the morning on the day of the photoshoot they picked me and my equipment up and went out of the city. We spent all morning getting to the location, putting make up, setting up light.

I wanted to use a lot of dramatic light so I took almost all my equipment. I used my two Move 1200l kits with two MobiLed flashheads each so I had 4 lamps in total. For diffusing I used my Para 88, softboxes and umbrellas. I came fully equipped! I had a lot of different lightning set ups and was moving them constantly but I'll tell you about the first one that I've used for the photo with blue smoke and single photos of each band member.

In the right corner I had my MobiLed lamp with Para 88 attached for as a key light, in the left corner a lamp with silver umbrella as a fill light. Other two lamps I've put in the background to create different light accents like lightning up background and the tree branches. For the single shots I used the same key and fill light but also I've asked assistants to hold other two flashheads for back and side light for a more dramatic look. I don't usually do such set ups and I don't normally use this much light so this photoshoot was very experimental for me. But I enjoyed it.

This photoshoot took me out of my comfort zone and I'm very satisfied with the result. I really enjoy working with musicians because they are artists as well and usually are more open for experiments and interesting ideas.
