Happy Holidays!

Merry Christmas!🎄❄ We usually don't celebrate Christmas. But it's my most favorite time of the year 💙 In former USSR our orthodox Christmas is on January 7th and we're not religious people. We are all about New Year which is a big holiday with tree, decorations, big dinner, grandpa Frost and fireworks at the midnight.

Our families are far away in Ukraine so this year we're in Quebec, Canada:) It's freezing cold -11..-15C and snow blizzard❄ But it's a magical winter wonderland with lights, trees 🎄, carols and mulled wine, so I'm happy:)

Happy New Year!🎆🎄 All you in different time zones. Let the new year bring you more achievements and adventures! 2017 was very saturated with events and accomplishments. So 2018 bring it on! I'm excited to see what you will bring me.

Fall in Central Park🍁

Fall is not even close in New York which is a little disappointing. Went for a walk to Central Park yesterday, everything's still pretty green. I miss foggy days, yellow trees and rustling fallen leaves with your shoes:(

Was it worth moving to another country? It's a hard question I'm still trying to answer. Moving to US was the hardest step in my life. And I don't know what my life would be if I stayed home. Sometimes I look back and see only good things. But we all do, right? I see how my friends have families, jobs, they travel and I compare their life to mine. What does this country give me that I didn't get at home? I feel guilty for abandoning my parents, I still struggle with my English and my eastern european mentality, I still feel like I don't belong here, I don't really have friends. This city gives me hard times and I can't create like I used to in Ukraine. Feels like an everyday struggle with yourself. However I don't think I'll ever go back, just some thoughts I wanted to share.
•••

Photo plus

The last month was amazingly crazy! I've been quiet on social media but those of you who follow my Instagram stories know that I've been through quite a journey! I travelled in Europe for about 3 weeks. I went to beautiful Iceland and did a photo project there with @freespiritcrew, I did workshops in Paris and in Netherlands with @annapsyartist, I saw Amsterdam and I went home to Ukraine, met my missed friends and family!

Right after I came back the @photoplusexpo started. It was a crazy week of photography get together! Full of meetings, talks, seminars, exhibitions, shows and afterparties!

I am so overwhelmed, inspired and feel blessed by all these opportunities to travel to amazing places, new countries and new cities, to see old friends and make new ones, meet so many wonderful talented people and be able to do and create what I love!

There's a huge pile of photos that I need to edit now and emails that I need to write. So for now here's a photo from a Black&White party hosted by @rggedu this Thursday in New York City. It was so great to be surrounded by all these amazing and talented creatives! Can't wait to see you next time!
~~~
Последний месяц был невероятно сумасшедшим! Те, кто следит за моими Инстаграм историями, знает, что у меня то еще путешествие:) Я ездила по Европе почти 3 недели. Я была в чудесной Исландии и снимала там фотопроект, я провела воркшопы в Париже и Голландии, я съездила в Амстердам и потом домой в Украину, увидела друзей и семью!
И сразу после того, как я вернулась, начался Photo Plus Expo. Это огромная фото конвенция, которая проходит каждый год в Нью Йорке. Неделя встреч, семинаров, шоу, выставок и вечеринок!
Я так счастлива иметь все эти возможности путешествовать в удивительные места, новые страны и города, видеть старых друзей и заводить новых, знакомиться со столькими чудесными и талантливыми людьми, делать и творить то, что я люблю!
Теперь меня ждет огромный мешок необработанных фотографий и имейлов, которые надо написать. А пока вот фото с черно-белой вечеринки, которую устраивали RGG EDU в этот четверг в Нью Йорке. Здорово, когда тебя окружают талантливые люди, которые тебя вдохновляют. До новых встреч!
We're simply meant to be... 🖤
Happy Halloween! 🎃 It's time to lighten your candles and make some sweet punch. Even though I didn't dress up this year because of my crazy schedule, here's a photo from the photoshoot we did couple weeks ago in Ukraine, in Kiev Botanical garden. It's my favorite time of the year!
Jack and Sally from The Nightmare Before Christmas by my all time favorite creator Tim Burton. Yes, it's a real life size Jack skeleton! Made and produced by the lovely model Judy Wudy. Each time I'm just simply amazed by the craziness and passion for creation of ukrainian people! We had only about an hour to shoot before it got dark. So some spooky lights were used.
Всем счастливого Хэлоуина! Время зажигать свечи и варить сладкий пунш. И хотя в этом году я без костюма из-за моего сумасшедшего графика, вот вам фото, которое мы сделали пару недель назад в Киевском ботаническом саду. Это мое любимое время года!
Джек и Салли из мультика "Кошмары перед Рождеством" моего самого любимого сказочника Тима Бертона. И да, это настоящий скелет Джек в натуральную величину! Сделанный чудесной Джуди Вуди @judy_wudy_27. Каждый раз поражаюсь нереальностью и страстью к творчеству украинских людей. У нас было всего около часа на съемку.
Swamped
New photos we did couple months ago in Prospect Park in Brooklyn. At first the idea was for Melanie to go to that green water but then we saw signs that it's actually can be harmful😲 Algae is a small plant-like organism which grows in pond water. And it can be toxic! So we decided not to risk and not touch it. I had to improvise:) Hope you like it!
My photography equipment
I've got tons of questions about my photo equipment so here's a short video showing it! Sorry it's a bit awkward, I'm shy and not experienced in talking on camera:)
Equipment mentioned in the video:
Camera Nikon D600
Lenses:
Nikkor 50 1.8D
Helios 77m-4
Helios 81N
Helios 40-2-N
Petzval 85 art lens
Petzval 58 bokeh control
But always remember that it's not camera and lenses who do the photos, it's the photographer! It really doesn't matter what equipment you use. One of my best images was made with old Nikon D80 and cheap Nikkor 50 1.8D. I just love the character and bokeh of vintage lenses that's why I use them. The secret of good photography is your experienced eye and good taste in art, some knowledge about composition, color and light. Don't be afraid to experiment and never blame your camera or lens!
New York state of mind
Do you like to travel? Do you go somewhere? If not, why so? I always loved traveling. Going somewhere new is one of the best feelings in the world. Yes traveling requires quite a budget. But you always can save some money. We're not rich. It's all about priorities. Don't smoke, don't buy takeout coffee, cook at home. Do you really need a new car/phone or expensive furniture? Because in the end all you have is your memories. I'm so thankful I have an opportunity to travel. Travel makes you a bigger person. It helps you open your mind and understand this life better. My first trip to US in 2008 completely changed my world outlook. Living in one place is like living in a bubble of things that surround you. I suggest you to go out of the bubble as soon as there's an opportunity. There always will be not enough money, not the best time or busy schedule. There always going to be something. The only thing there's really not enough is your life.
А вы любите путешествовать? Ездите куда-то? Если нет, то почему? Я всегда любила поездки. Еще когда училась и толком не было денег, старалась хоть куда-то съездить и поняла, что это одно из самых чудесных чувств в жизни - отправляться в новые места. Мы живем небогато. Да, путешествия дело недешевое, но всегда можно на чем-то сэкономить. Все дело в приоритетах. Откажитесь от сигарет, выносного кофе, частых походов в бар. Вам точно нужна новая машина в кредит и дорогая мебель? Ведь в конце все, что у вас останется - это воспоминания. Я благодарна судьбе, что у меня есть возможность путешествовать. В моменты, когда я думаю, что все плохо, я вспоминаю те места, где мы были, и уже кажется все не таким плохим. Путешествия обогащают духовно, культурно. Они заставляют тебя думать и лучше понимать эту жизнь. Я помню свою первую поездку в США в 2008, которая полностью перевернула мой взгляд на мир. Живя на одном месте, мы живем в пузыре своего окружения и того, что оно нам дает. Я советую вам выходить из этого пузыря, как только появляется возможность. Денег всегда мало, работа никогда не закончится, всегда будет не подходящее время и всегда вам будет что-то мешать. Единственное, чего на самом деле мало, это отведенной вам жизни.
Butterflies in my stomach
Butterflies in my stomach. Self-portrait.
Using @broncolorusa new RFS 2.2 transmitter and Move 1200l
Butterflies in my stomach - is an anxious and nervous feeling inside yourself (inside your stomach). This image is metaphor of dealing with stress, anxiety and releasing my inner bugs. I've had issues with dark thoughts and depression for the past couple of years and this image represents my attempt to reconsider my life and to be reborn into a new person.
Here's a little making of and editing timelapse. 3,5 hours in 3,5 minutes!
Equipment used:
♡ Broncolor Move 1200l battery pack
♡ 60 x 60 softbox
♡ Broncolor new RFS 2.2 transmitter
Music by Kilimanjaro Darkjazz Ensemble - Lobby
The "Butterflies in my stomach" video time-lapse has already reached over 140k views on my Youtube channel, was featured on PetaPixel and BoredPanda and so many people contacted me about featuring which is amazing!
When posting new work and now more Youtube videos I'm always insecure if they are good enough and how people will react.
Thank you guys so much for all support and lovely comments! I'm not able to reply everybody but I appreciate it a lot. For me your feedback is the biggest inspiration!
Most of the time I don't wear full coverage make up, it's really only some concealer, highlighter and brows of course😄 so it's all about skincare! I like trying out new products and this time I've got some goodies from @Michaeltoddbeauty. It's organic and cruelty free!
4th of July
Happy 4th of July! It's been almost 3 years since I moved to this country with only 2 bags of stuff and a desire to be something more. I often hear some funny stories about how americans/europeans move to another state with speaking English, citizenship and family backup and how hard it was. No connections, no family, no job offers, not speaking the language properly, no credit history, nothing. I was starting my life from scratch. And through all blood, sweat and tears here I am still struggling. But I am thankful to this country for every little opportunity it gave me to travel, to create, to be myself. There's no turning back.
~
С днем Независимости! Прошло уже почти 3 года, как я переехала в США с двумя сумками вещей и желанием чего-то большего. Часто слышу истории о том, как бедные американцы/европейцы переезжают в другой штат со знанием английского, гражданством и семьей за плечами и как им тяжело. Ни связей, ни предложений по работе, ни семьи, ни нормального знания языка, ничего. Я начинала жизнь с нуля. И спустя все кровь, пот и слезы, я все еще тут пытаюсь кем-то стать. Но я благодарна этой стране, за каждую небольшую возможность путешествовать, творить и просто быть собой. Назад дороги нет.
I won't lie it's nice to be attractive. Everybody likes you and are nice to you. But there's another side of the story. You can't really have friends. Women are jealous and secretly hate you, men need more than friendship and they don't see you as a person. I've lost some good acquaintances like that. So many times I've tried to have interesting time with new people and have a conversation, but they see you as an object and start flirting, acting too familiar and hitting on you. And if you make a hint that you're not interested and actually married the behavior may change to passive aggressive. Most annoying is when they don't take you seriously. I always try to be nice but hey I'm a human and I have personality. One of my friends photographers recently blocked me on all social media because he likes me and my photos distracted him from work. That kinda sucked.
~
Врать не буду, хорошо быть привлекательной. Ты всем нравишься, к тебе все благосклонны. Но есть другая сторона медали. У тебя толком нет друзей. Женщины тебе завидуют и тихо ненавидят, мужчинам нужно что-то больше и они не воспринимают тебя как личность. Я так потеряла уже не одно хорошее знакомство. Было не раз, что ты пытаешься интересно провести время с новыми людьми и просто пообщаться, но диалога не выходит, потому что в тебе видят лишь объект и разговор приобретает другое русло. Кокетство, фамильярность и откровенные подкаты прямым текстом. А если начинаешь тонко намекать, что тебе это неинтересно и вообще ты замужем, поведение может смениться на пассивно агрессивное. Больше всего бесит, когда тебя не воспринимают всерьез. Я стараюсь быть вежливой и приветливой, но я же человек и у меня есть внутренний мир. Один друг фотограф на днях заблокировал меня во всех соц сетях, потому что он ко мне неравнодушен и якобы мои фотографии отвлекают его от работы. Было как-то неприятно.
Iceland 2017
We did it, we came back! This time Iceland was freezing and covered with snow. We spent our time on south and south-east of the country. We saw places and spots we didn't see in September.
The weather in Iceland is so unpredictable and changeable that during our 6 day trip we witnessed snow storm and had to stay 1 day in a hotel, rain, wind, sun and clear sky. On the storm day there was a strong wind up to 70 km\h and a curtain of snow. You coudln't see a couple of meters in front of you. We were lucky we had our hotel reservations at the same place for those two days. Also we got stuck in a snow once and couldn't get out for at least half an hour. So be careful driving if you don't have a 4x4 car. Temperature in winter in Iceland is from -2 to +2 C which is not super cold but strong wind and humidity make it feel colder
From my experience there were as many people in February as in September which was surprising. We thought winter is a dead season in Iceland. Not anymore:) So I had to photoshop people out of some photos.
Prices are a little lower than during the high season but not much. This time we also stayed in guesthouses and Airbnb.
A little dream came true - I bought myself a lopapeysa! Lopapeysa is an Icelandic sweater handmade of 100% sheep wool. It's pretty expensive. In Reykjavik price starts from 18 000 kronas which is about $170. It's super warm and cosy.
One of the main reasons of going to Iceland in winter was to see ice caves. We booked a tour to Crystal Ice Cave in Europe's largest glacier Vatnajökull with @arcticadventures. Tours are availabe only in winter. There are many other companies that can offer you trips and online booking. You'll have a ride through snow and national park Skaftafell and meet other tourist groups. I asked the tour guide why there were so many people. I thought that was because of the Saturday but it turned out now it's always like that. If you'd had went to Iceland 2-3 year ago you'd probably be the only people there at this time of the year. The cave itself is rather small. To be honest I expected a little more but I was impressed by the color of the ice. I can't believe that the color of the ice is actually that blue.
Second main purpose of this trip was seeing Aurora. To see Northern lights many factors must come together: night time, clear sky, high Aurora activity, no moon, no city lights. I can't believe we were lucky enough to see it on our last night. We came out of the restaurant and I saw the movement in the evening sky. Next few hours we spent watching the sky dance.
Мы это сделали, мы вернулись! На этот раз Исландия встретила нас морозом и толщей снега. Мы сосредоточились только на юге и юго-востоке страны. Увидели точки, которые не успели увидеть в сентябре.
Погода в Исландии настолько непредсказуема и переменчива, что за 6 дней своей поездки мы застали снежный шторм и были вынуждены провести 1 день в гостинице, дождь, ветер, солнце и ясное небо. В день шторма был очень сильный ветер, который доходил до 70 км\час и занавес снега, что видно было только на пару метров вперед. Нам повезло, что у нас была забронирована одна и та же гостиница на эти два дня. А еще мы умудрились однажды застрять в снегу и не могли выбраться как минимум полчаса. Так что будьте осторожны, если у вас не 4х4. Зимой в Исландии температура колеблется от -2 до +2, что не так уж и холодно, но из-за сильного ветра и влажности ощущается хуже.
К моему удивлению людей было не меньше, чем в сентябре. Мы думали, что зима это мертвый сезон в Исландии, но как оказалось больше нет. Приходилось с некоторых фото убирать людей в Фотошопе:)
Цены немного ниже, чем в высокий сезон, но не намного. В этот раз мы тоже останавливались в гэстхаусах и Airbnb.
А у меня сбылась маленькая мечта - я купила себе лопапейсу. Лопапейса - это исландский свитер, связанный вручную из 100% натуральной овечьей шерсти. Довольно дорогой. В Рейкьявике цена начинается от 18000 крон, что примерно $170. Очень тёплый и уютный.
Одной из причин, по которой мы поехали в Исландию зимой - ледяные пещеры. Мы забронировали заранее тур в ледяную пещеру в самом большом в Европе леднике Vatnajokull. Туры в пещеры доступны только зимой. Есть много сайтов и компаний, где это можно сделать онлайн. Вас везут на огромном внедорожнике через толщу льда и снега по национальному парку Skaftafell и будьте готовы тесниться с другими тур группами людей. Я спросила экскурсовода, почему так много людей. Я думала из-за того, что была суббота, но как оказалось, теперь это всегда так. Всего года 2-3 назад мы бы, возможно, были там единственными туристами в это время. Сама пещера небольшая. Я, честно говоря, ожидала немного больше, насмотревшись отфотошопленных фото в интернете, но меня поразил цвет льда. Не верится, что он на самом деле такой голубой.
Второй главное причиной и целью нашей поездки было увидеть Северное сияние. Чтобы его увидеть, должно совпасть много факторов: ночь, ясное небо, высокая активность, новолуние, отсутствие огней города. Я до сих пор не могу поверить, что нам повезло увидеть Аврору в последнюю ночь. Мы вышли из ресторана и я заметила движение и странные облака зеленого цвета. Следующие несколько часов мы провели с термосом, наблюдая как танцует небо.
Last flight
Last flight. ✈Self portrait, Iceland.
~
I did this shot during our last trip to Iceland at the famous DC-3 plane wreckage. The road to the plane is closed now so you have to walk about an hour to get there. It was windy and cold as hell and I almost freezed to death wearing only a shirt and a leather jacket, my eyes were running and couldn't feel my hands. The paper plane was an actual real paper plane I made before the shoot. How far can you go for a good shot?:)
Этот снимок я сделала во время нашей последней поездки в Исландию возле знаменитого авиакрушения самолета DC-3. Дорога к нему теперь закрыта и нужно идти почти час пешком. Было ужасно ветренно и холодно и я замерзла к чертям в одной рубашке и кожаной куртке, у меня текли глаза и я не чувствовала рук. Бумажный самолет был настоящим бумажным самолетом, который я сделала перед съёмкой. А как далеко вы готовы пойти ради хорошего снимка?:)
Super cool shot of me by Renee Robyn Photography in Nelson ghost town, Nevada.
Me by talented @nikkiharrisonphotographer Nikki Harrison 💙
That day in Nevada desert when I felt myself like a fairy tale princess
~
Мой портрет от талантливой @nikkiphotographer из теплой пустыни Невады, где я почувствовала себя сказочной принцессой
And a little BTS of me shooting Renee Robyn by Pratik Naik in Nelson ghost town somewhere in Nevada desert:) Together with Zach Sutton we all went for a little road trip to check out this spot and take some pics. There are dope old vintage cars, barns and even a crashed plane. It's actually a popular spot and it's worth seeing!
Небольшой бэкстейдж, как я фотографирую @thereneerobyn сделал @solsticeretouch в городе-призраке Нельсон где-то посреди пустыни в Неваде :) Мы поехали в мини дорожное приключение заценить локацию и сделать пару фото. Там много крутых старых винтажных машин, амбары и даже разбитый самолет. Это довольно популярное место и туда точно стоит съездить.
